The York College, CUNY Social Science Field School Program in the Republic of Moldova builds on seven years of productive collaboration with the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University “Nicolae Testemitanu” resulting in regular research projects funded through CUNY and private foundations and conducted throughout Moldova; several international conferences in Moldova; and numerous conference presentations, book chapters, and articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. Throughout the course of this relationship York was represented principally by Dr. William T. Divale, Professor of Anthropology and Dr. Vadim Moldovan, Associate Prof. of Social Work. Other York faculty members and administrators have traveled to Moldova to conduct research, participate in conferences, and formalize linkages with Moldovan institutions.

Through the years, the York counterpart in Moldova was Dr. Anatol Nacu, Chair of the Dept. of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Narcology at the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University and one-time Chief Psychiatric Adviser to the Ministry of Health.  In February of 2011, when a meeting sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, our contacts expanded to include Dr. Viorelia Moldovan-Batrinac, Vice Rector of the Free International University of Moldova (ULIM). In the summer of 2012 ULIM hosted the YC Social Science Field School Program in Moldova by providing classroom space, dormitories, English-speaking native students, and access to client populations.  In 2013 we return to ULIM and will be doing field studies in homes for street children and in psychiatric hospitals.
